FARMINGTON, Maine - Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale,
Maine) scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the University
of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team topped Plymouth
State University, 71-67, in non-conference action Thursday evening
in Dearborn Gymnasium.
Jillian Ross (Belfast, Maine) added 17 points in the victory
for the Beavers with Ashley Busque (Belgrade, Maikne) putting in 12
points. Laflin and Ross each knocked down three 3-pointers in the
contest.
Senior Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) scored 21
points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Panthers, including 15-of-17
from the foul line. It was her third straight double-double (double
figures in points and rebounds) and her third 20-10 performance (20
points, 10 rebounds) of the season. Sophomore Alicia
Doucet (Manchester, N.H./Central) added 15 points and
senior Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West)
pitched in 14 points.
Plymouth State canned three three-pointers over the opening 4:41 on
the game to build a 13-4 lead. The Beavers got back into the
contest with a Ross trey with 9:47 left in the first putting the
hosts ahead, 24-23. The two teams traded the lead for the rest of
the half, including five ties, with Farmington taking a 36-34 edge
into the break.
Behind seven points from Kent, the Panthers used a 9-2 run midway
through the second to take a 55-50 advantage. The Beavers tied the
game at 61-all with 5:26 to play on a Laflin 3-pointer and took the
lead for good on a Laflin layup at 63-61 with 4:50 remaining. Ross
and Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine) hit free throws in the final
minute to help Farmington hold on for the 71-67 victory.
UMaine Farmington (2-5) is scheduled to host Thomas College
Saturday at 1 p.m. in North Atlantic Conference action. The
Panthers (10-2) are slated to host Western Connecticut in a Little
East Conference affair Saturday at 1 p.m.
