Box Score Cooke's hat trick lifts Spartans past
Panthers
CASTLETON, Vt. – Junior Hilary Cooke
(Marlborough, Conn.) scored a hat-trick Wednesday evening to propel
the Castleton State College women's soccer team past Plymouth
State University, 4-0, in non-conference action at Spartan
Stadium.
The Spartans have won nine straight games and have not been scored
upon in 360 minutes of play. Castleton improves to 12-2 overall
while the Panthers had their two-game win streak stopped and fall
to 5-8.
Cooke opened up the scoring eight minutes into the game, receiving
a through pass from teammate Brynn Campbell (Clarendon, Vt.) near
the left side of the box and finished with a shot tucked just
inside the left post behind Plymouth State goaltender
Angelina LaBroad (Hampton, N.H.).
Less than two minutes later, Cooke scored again, set up beautifully
by Maria Arnot (Mildford, N.Y.) and Megan Blongy (Rutland, Vt.).
From about 30-yards out, Arnot fed Blongy with a pass near the
right side of the box. Then, Blongy quickly played a low cross to
Cooke on the left flank and she one-touched the ball inside the
left post for a 2-0 advantage.
Castleton defender Kelly Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) kept the
Panthers off of the scoreboard in the 15th minute,
stopping Sam LaLiberte's (Concord, N.H.)
shot from going into the net after it beat Castleton goaltender
Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.) from the right side of the box.
Moments later, Davis kept the Spartans' shutout streak intact
robbing Carol Messler (Durham, N.H.) on a shot
attempt from the left flank that was targeted just under the
crossbar.
Courtney Chadburn (No. Clarendon, Vt.) made it 3-0 for Castleton at
55:05 with a successful penalty kick for her 16th goal of the
season. Cooke completed her hat trick with 12 minutes to play,
chipping a shot just under the crossbar for her 14th goal of the
season.
LaBroad stopped seven shots while Davis earned her fifth shutout of
the season turning away three.
Castleton will travel to Maine Maritime Academy Saturday for a 1:00
p.m. North Atlantic Conference (NAC) match up. Plymouth State
returns to Little East Conference play at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at
UMass Dartmouth.
