Box Score Panthers win for fourth time in last five
outings
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Sammi Jo
Saltalamacchia (Sandown, N.H. /Timberlane) scored all
three goals Tuesday evening to lift Plymouth State University to a
3-0 victory over Bridgewater State University in a non-conference
women's soccer match at chilly Panther Field.
Saltalamacchia (right) scored all three goals in a
six-minute span in the first half, and the Panther defense did the
rest, blanking the Bears for its second straight shutout and fifth
of the season. PSU won for the fourth time in its last five
outings, improving to 7-8-0 overall, while the Bears dropped their
second in a row and dipped to 5-8-0.
Junior Courtney Lins (Fremont, N.H./Timberlane)
made 10 saves in the Panther goal to earn the shutout in her first
start in a Panther uniform. She was supported by solid play
in front of her by defenders Sarah Pandiscio
(Simsbury, Conn.), Amy Green (Atkinson,
N.H./Timberlane), Kelsey Marvin (Elizabethtown,
N.Y.) and Shannon Snively (Fremont,
N.H./Sanborn).
Saltalamacchia put the Panthers on the board 10 minutes into the
game, blasting a crossing pass from freshman Carol
Messler (Durham, N.H.) from the top of the box into the
back of the net. Less than three minutes later,
Saltalamacchia made it 2-0 with an unassisted strike from about 30
yards out just inside the right post, and a little more than three
minutes later, she finished off her hat trick, converting a Panther
fast break by knocking in a crossing pass from freshman
Cassie Graham (Foster, R.I.) Saltalamacchia
now has five goals on the season, second-most on the team.
That ended up as all the scoring in the game. Bridgewater had
an 11-10 advantage in shots in the first half, while PSU had a slim
5-4 margin the second half, leaving the totals for the game even at
15 apiece.
Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference play Saturday with
a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at UMass Boston. BSU visits Massachusetts
Maritime on Saturday for a 12 noon MASCAC match-up.
