Penalty kick results in game-winner for Vikings

SALEM, Mass. – KatyLyn Verrette (Saugus, Mass.) capitalized on a first-half penalty kick to push the Salem State University Vikings over the Plymouth State University Panthers, 1-0, Tuesday evening in a non-conference women's soccer match-up at Alumni Field.

Verrette's successful penalty kick resulted in her first goal of the season, and Leah Potcner (Wilmington, Mass.) earned the win with a perfect three-for-three effort in net. The Vikings advance to 4-6-1 on the season, while the Panthers are now 3-7 on the season.

Salem State controlled the pitch in the first half. The defense allowed only one shot on goal. At 40:02 a high-speed collision by opposing players set up a Viking penalty kick. Verette scored into the left-hand side for the only goal of the contest.

The Viking defense allowed only two second half shots to reach the grasp of Potcner.  Junior Angelina LaBroad (Hampton, NH) suffered the loss in the PSU net while turning away three shots.

PSU returns home to host Lyndon State College on Thursday in a non-conference make-up game (4:00 p.m.)  Salem State will travel to conference rival Bridgewater State Saturday at 12 o'clock.
