Box Score Penalty kick results in game-winner for
Vikings
SALEM, Mass. – KatyLyn Verrette (Saugus,
Mass.) capitalized on a first-half penalty kick to push the Salem
State University Vikings over the Plymouth State University
Panthers, 1-0, Tuesday evening in a non-conference women's
soccer match-up at Alumni Field.
Verrette's successful penalty kick resulted in her first goal
of the season, and Leah Potcner (Wilmington, Mass.) earned the win
with a perfect three-for-three effort in net. The Vikings advance
to 4-6-1 on the season, while the Panthers are now 3-7 on the
season.
Salem State controlled the pitch in the first half. The defense
allowed only one shot on goal. At 40:02 a high-speed collision by
opposing players set up a Viking penalty kick. Verette scored into
the left-hand side for the only goal of the contest.
The Viking defense allowed only two second half shots to reach the
grasp of Potcner. Junior Angelina LaBroad
(Hampton, NH) suffered the loss in the PSU net while turning
away three shots.
PSU returns home to host Lyndon State College on Thursday in a
non-conference make-up game (4:00 p.m.) Salem State will
travel to conference rival Bridgewater State Saturday at 12
o'clock.
