Box Score Panthers blanked for third straight
contest
GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Cathy Wise (Cape
Elizabeth, Maine) and senior Danielle Poulin (Readfield, Maine)
each scored two goals Saturday afternoon to lead the University of
Southern Maine to a 5-0 victory over Plymouth State University in a
Little East Conference women's soccer match at the USM Soccer
Field.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Huskies who improve
to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Panthers
dropped their third straight match to slide to 3-5 overall and 0-2
in LEC play.
Wise gave the home side the early advantage placing an eight-yard
header under the diving PSU goalkeeper in the fifth minute.
Poulin served the cross from the right side into the box to collect
the assist. Wise scored her second goal in the 38th minute
winning the ball at the top of the 18-yard area and powering home a
right-footed shot.
Poulin got into the goal-scoring column in the 52nd minute lifting
a shot from the top, right-wing corner of the penalty area over the
keeper and into the far side of the net. She would duplicate
the feat in the 65th minute for her second goal of the match.
In between Poulin's two goals, senior Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston,
Maine/St. Dominic) headed home a corner kick taken by senior
Chelsea Norton (Westbrook, Maine).
Both sides employed two goalkeepers in the match. For USM,
junior Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine/Leavitt Area) and sophomore Katie
Cobb (Lewiston, Maine) combined to make five saves. Juniors
Angelina LaBroad (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) and
Courtney Lins (Fremont, N.H./Timberlane Regional)
recorded four saves for Plymouth State.
Southern Maine looks to make it two in a row on Wednesday (4:00
p.m.) when it hosts Bowdoin College. Plymouth State next
plays on Thursday (4:30 p.m.) hosting Lyndon State
College.
