Walsh tops Panthers in LEC road loss

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Courtney Cochran became the 20th player in program history to score 1000 points Tuesday evening, posting her 12 double-double of the season with 18 points and 16 rebounds and helping the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 74-52 win over the Plymouth State University Panthers in a Little East Conference women's basketball game at Hill Gymnasium.

Cochran now has 1005 career points in her career.  Senior Nicole Garland led all scorers with 22 points on an outstanding 6-for-10 mark from three-point range.  Junior Jordan Grant added 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Junior Kellie Walsh paced the Panthers with 17 points off of the bench.  Walsh was 7-for-13 from the floor and 3-for-5 from three-point range.   Senior Michaela Galvin tossed in 12 points and junior Katie Seraikas chipped in with eight.

After a sloppy first half of play the Huskies lead the Panthers 39-32 at the half.  Cochran finished the first half with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Garland converted 4-of-8 from long range for 12 points. Southern Maine quickly took control scoring the first 10 points of the second half to open up a 17-point lead.

The Panthers countered with a 7-0 run, including five straight point from Walsh, to trail the Huskies 49-39 with 14:23 to play, but it was as close as Plymouth State would get the rest of the way.

Both teams conclude the regular season on Saturday, with Southern Maine (19-5 overall, 10-3 LEC) traveling to UMass Dartmouth and Plymouth State (5-18 overall, 1-12 Little East) visiting Western Connecticut.
