Castleton uses big first half to run past PSU Women's Basketball

Box Score

Panthers battle back in second half; Perry leads all scorers with 17 points

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton State College women's basketball team used a 12-0 run to open the game on its way to defeating Plymouth State University 67-52 Tuesday night at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

The Spartans used a swarming defense and some good long range shooting to build a 34-12 halftime lead.  Castleton hit on 5-of-12 shots from three-point range, while the defense held Plymouth to just 5-of-28 shooting (17.9%) in the opening half.

The Panthers, led by junior Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.), fought back in the second half but were unable to overcome the slow start.  Perry dropped in 15 second half points to finish with a game-high 17.  She connected on three-of-four three-point attempts and also pulled in five rebounds.  Senior Tiffany Lewis (Hillsboro, N.H.) added 11 points, including 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line, while sophomore Savannah Miller (Smithtown, N.Y.) added eight points in the losing effort.

Castleton junior Bryanna DuPont (Marshfield, Vt.) ripped down a game-high 20 rebounds while adding 13 points.  Senior Jade Desroches (Berkshire, Vt.) led the Spartans with 16 points, while sophomore Lindsay Sabo (Stanhope, N.J.) and senior Meghan O'Sullivan (No. Merrick, N.Y.) added 13 and 12 points respectively.  Sabo also collected seven rebounds.  Castleton owned a 48-35 rebounding edge.

Castleton used an 11-3 run over the first three minutes of the second half to build its largest lead of the game, 45-15, but Plymouth State slowly chipped away.  With eight minutes left in the half, a Perry three-pointer cut the Spartan lead to 15 (53-38).  Plymouth was unable to get any closer, however, as the two teams played even over the remainder of the game.

PSU (3-2) had its three-game win streak snapped.  The Panthers return to the hardwood next Tuesday when they host Colby-Sawyer in a 6:00 p.m. game.  Castleton (3-1) will host Lyndon State Wednesday night (12/3) in the NAC opener for both teams.
