Box Score Lewis leads Panthers in LEC setback to league-leading Corsairs
DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, Mass.) each posted double-doubles as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth topped Plymouth State University, 76-41, in Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center
Ronaghan, the LEC's leading scorer, matched her season average with 19 points while grabbing 12 rebounds as Garrity contributed 14 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to keep the Corsairs atop of the LEC standings.
Plymouth State was led by senior Tiffany Lewis (Hillsboro, N.H.), who finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Madison Beatrice (Newton, Mass.) added seven points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists, while senior Kelley Collins (Groveton, N.H.) chipped in six points, five rebounds and two assists.
PSU struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the first half, missing its first nine field goal attempts while UMD opened up a 6-0 lead. A Beatrice jumper and three-pointer sandwiched around a Corsair layup to cut the deficit to 8-5. The Panthers trailed 12-9 after a Collins layup with 9:10 to play in the opening frame, before a 6-0 Corsairs spurt, capped by a three from junior Marisa McCabe (Cedar Grove, N.J.).
A pair of free throws from sophomore Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) and a jumper by classmate Ace Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) brought PSU back within five (18-13) with four minutes left in the opening frame, but UMD responded with a 15-2 outburst to lead 33-15 at the intermission.
Ronaghan opened the scoring in the second half to push the Corsair lead to 20, and a three from junior Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) and another Ronaghan bucket forced a Panther timeout with PSU trailing 40-15. The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes and a Colins jumper with 7:33 to play left PSU down 59-35, but that was as close as the Panthers would get.
Plymouth State (6-10, 0-7 LEC) will visit in-state LEC rival Keene State Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. UMD (13-4, 6-1 LEC) will also be in action on Tuesday, playing host to Rhode Island College in an LEC match-up at 5:30 p.m.
