Box Score Bell leads Panthers to non-conference victory
LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Senior Emily Bell (Derry, N.H.) tallied a goal and an assist Sunday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated Lyndon State College, 2-1, in a non-conference women's soccer match.
The Panthers, 2-0-1 in their last three games, improve to 7-6-1 overall, matching the most wins in a season since 2010.
The visiting Panthers got on the board early as they were awarded a penalty kick from a hand ball in the box. Bell's kick caromed off keeper Johanna Sargent's (West Brookfield, Vt.) hand and into the net in the 7th minute.
In the 22nd minute, Bell crossed a ball from the right side that found junior Hannah Kallis (Sanford, Maine), who placed a shot into the right side of the net to push the score to 2-0. The Hornets were able to make a few pushes but were unsuccessful as the score remained 2-0 at the end of the first half.
Aitanna Greenwood (Salt Lake City, Utah) cut the score in half for the Hornets in the 55th minute when she received a lead pass from Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, N.H.) and dribbled closer to the goal before she carefully placed the ball around Plymouth keeper Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.).
Despite a few attacks by the Hornets in the final minutes the Panthers would hang on for the 2-1 win. Schmidt made two saves in the win for the Panthers (7-6-1). Sargent took the loss for the Hornets with a seven-save effort.
Plymouth State returns home to host Castleton on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Lyndon finishes its season at 2-13-1 overall and 1-8-0 in the North Atlantic Conference.
