Box Score

Lawrence and Schmidt provide highlights for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Visiting Castleton University had three players scoring 14 points apiece, as they jumped out to an early lead that they would not relinquish, defeating Plymouth State University women's basketball, 63-42, at Foley Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

Junior Ace Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) led the Panther offense with 10 points, while classmate Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) added 6 points, and a game high 10 rebounds.

The Spartans (4-0) received balanced scoring from Jade Desroches (Enosburg, Vt.), Bryanna DuPont (Marshfield, Vt.), and Lindsay Sabo (Stanhope, N.J.), with each player contributing 14 points.  Sabo's included 4 of 5 from 3 point range.

After the teams traded early baskets, Castleton would jump out to a double digit lead that they would maintain throughout the first quarter (20-9).  With the second quarter starting in similar fashion, the teams traded scores before the Spartans began to extend their advantage, leading by as many as 19, before being pegged back by two late lay-up baskets from Schmidt, and teammate Madison Beatrice (Newton, Mass.), for a halftime score of 38-23.

Sabo would take over early in the third quarter, extending the Spartans lead to 24 on back to back 3 point shots.  The Spartans would maintain a 20 plus point lead throughout the quarter, despite the Panthers cutting into the lead with two 3 point baskets from senior Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.) in the final 90 seconds of the period, leaving the score at 57-36.

Defense would prove to be the theme of the final quarter, as both teams held the other to 6 points.  The Panthers would finish with 15 of 54 shooting (27.8%), while the Spartans connected on 24 of 53 shots (45.3%).

Plymouth State (0-4) will look to regroup after the Thanksgiving break, with a visit to in-state rival Colby Sawyer College (Tuesday, 12/1, 7:00 p.m.).  Castleton will return to New Hampshire for their next match, to play New England College (Wednesday, 12/2, 5:30 p.m.).
