WTEN: Panthers overpower Southern Maine, streak hits six

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.), sophomore Sarah Asciutto (Manchester, Vt.) and freshmen Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) all won twice as Plymouth State University kicked off its Homecoming Weekend in style, rolling over the University of Southern Maine, 8-1, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis match at the Holderness School Courts on Friday afternoon.

In a makeup of this week's previously postponed match, the Panthers wasted little time steamrolling their way to a six straight win while remaining unbeaten in conference play. Plymouth State's only setback this season came against an NCAA Division II opponent.

PSU swept doubles play and took No. 2 through No. 6 singles to win in another dominant performance.

The Panthers move to 8-1 (4-0 LEC), while Southern Maine falls to 0-6 (0-4 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 8, Southern Maine 1
    • Plymouth State (8-1, 4-0 LEC)
    • Southern Maine (0-6, 0-4 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State jumped out with a quick three points after controlling doubles play. Junior Megan Marshall (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Asciutto earned an 8-1 win at No. 1, while Miller and sophomore Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) held their opponents off the board for an 8-0 win at No. 2.
  • LaBarre and Cardoso stayed unbeaten as a team, rolling to an 8-0 victory at No. 3 pairs.
  • The Huskies picked up their lone point at No. 1 singles, but Asciutto, LaBarre and Cardoso all swept their singles matches without surrendering a game to win at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.
  • Miller surrendered just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, while junior Alyssa Bettencourt (West Brookfield, Mass.) picked up the victory at No. 6 by a 6-1, 6-1 margin.
By the Numbers:
  • PSU improves to 20-5 against the Huskies since the 1998-99 season. USM won the first three matchups, but Plymouth State has taken 20-of-the-last-22 and each of the last 13 meetings.
  • LaBarre and Cardoso have won all five matches as a team, giving up just four games in the process.
  • Miller and Puzio are also unbeaten as a duo, moving to 5-0.
Up Next:
  • Plymouth State's biggest test of the season comes on Tuesday (Oct. 5) when the Panthers head to Rhode Island College for a key LEC contest. The Anchorwomen have won four-straight LEC Tournament titles.
