MSOC: Panthers’ rally falls just short at Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. – Plymouth State University nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages but time ran out on the Panthers' rally in a 4-3 setback at Castleton University in Little East Conference (LEC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

Castleton scored twice in the first half and pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 69th minute, but the Panthers came roaring back. PSU got on the board in the 71st minute, but the hosts countered five minutes later for a 4-1 advantage. Not willing to give in, Plymouth State battled back scoring in the 79th and 89th minutes to make it a one-score game, but time ran out before the Panthers could complete the comeback bid.

Plymouth State dips to 2-9-0 (1-6-0 LEC), while the Spartans improve to 4-10-0 and 2-4-0 in conference play.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Castleton 4
    • Plymouth State (2-9-0, 1-6-0 LEC)
    • Castleton (4-10-0, 2-4-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Castleton got the scoring started in the 13th minute and doubled its lead eight minutes later.
  • The lead could have been 3-0 if not for a brilliant save by sophomore goalkeeper Nicolas Cornejo (Durham, N.H.) on a Spartans' penalty kick.
  • Plymouth State pressured in the offensive end, with sophomore Faisal Abdallah (Concord, N.H.) firing multiple shots on goal, but Castleton maintained the 2-0 advantage into halftime.
  • The Panthers continued to press, earning several corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the second half but were unable to break through and the Spartans extended the lead to 3-0  in the 69th minute.
  • Abdallah was able to finish after collecting a feed from junior Milian Eklund (Akersberga, Sweden) for his first career goal in the 71st minute, but the hosts came right back to restore the three-goal lead.
  • Undeterred, PSU continued to fight and the Panthers' resilience was rewarded when Eklund buried a pass from freshman August Westerholm (Stockholm, Sweden) in the 79th minute.
  • Plymouth State kept the pressure on the Castleton defense, firing multiple shots over the remaining 11 minutes and freshman Ethan Bryce (Seymour, Conn.) was able to convert another Westerholm setup to trim the margin to 4-3, but time ran out on the Panthers' comeback attempt.
By the Numbers:
  • Eklund finished with a goal and an assist for his first points of the year, while Westerholm's two assists give him a team-high three on the season.
  • Bryce scored for the second straight game.
  • After averaging 0.44 goals per game over the first nine contests, Plymouth State has started to find its offensive rhythm with five goals in the last two games.
  • Cornejo finished with seven saves for the Panthers.
  • Each team fired 20 shots and earned six corner kicks.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers head to Fitchburg State University for a non-conference game on Tuesday (Oct. 19) at 7:00 p.m.
