WSOC: Panthers battle Castleton to scoreless draw

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Elena Register (Helena, Ala.) made six saves and posted her fifth clean sheet in as many starts as Plymouth State University battled Castleton University to a 0-0 double overtime draw in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer game at Arold Field on Saturday afternoon.

Scoring opportunities were limited for both teams, but both goalkeepers came up with clutch saves at key moments to keep the opposition off the scoreboard.

Plymouth State moves to 6-4-2 (2-3-2 LEC), while Castleton ends the day at 6-4-3 and 3-1-2 in the LEC.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, Castleton 0 (2 OT)
    • Plymouth State (6-4-2, 2-3-2 LEC)
    • Castleton (6-4-3, 3-1-2 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Castleton had a prime opportunity in the 13th minute when a long pass over the top led to a breakaway chance, but Register made a great save to push the shot over the crossbar.
  • Register made four more stops in the second half to keep the game scoreless.
  • Senior Sarah Hicks (Sutton, Mass.) took a free kick from outside the box on the right side with just over a minute remaining in regulation junior Emily Haik (Westerly, R.I.) nearly got a foot on, but the Castleton keeper scooped it up and the game went into extra time.
  • Senior Emily Geyselaers (Cornwall Bridge, Conn.) won a 50-50 ball midway through the first overtime and sent a bending ball into the box for freshman Kaitlyn Montelongo (South Paris, Maine), but again the Castleton goalie was able to break it up.
  • Sophomore Ashley Plante (Concord, N.H.) got a cross past the goalie from the left side in the opening minute of the second overtime, but the Panthers were unable to get a foot on the ball.
  • Senior Taylor Siewierski (Colebrook, N.H.) sent a ball ahead for Hicks midway through the frame, but the Castleton goalkeeper won the footrace to the ball. Siewierski had an opportunity moments later when a bouncing ball found her foot at the top of the box but her shot deflected off a defender and Castleton was able to clear.
  • PSU's best chance at the golden goal came with just over three minutes left when Geyselaers played a long ball up the right side to Plante, who danced around a defender before blasting a shot on net, but again the Castleton goalie came up big and the game ended in a tie.
By the Numbers:
  • PSU held a 15-10 advantage in shots, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Panthers earned seven corners to Castleton's two.
  • Plymouth State didn't allow a shot in either overtime period, outshooting the Spartans by a 7-0 margin in extra time.
  • Register has not allowed a goal this season and is now 4-0-1 on the year.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers visit Eastern Connecticut State University next Saturday (Oct. 23) for a 1:00 p.m. LEC contest.
