MSOC: Nilsson leads Panthers past NVU-Lyndon

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore David Nilsson (Karlstad, Sweden) scored twice and added an assist as Plymouth State University ran past Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, 4-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game at Panther Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Nilsson delivered a perfect corner less than 90 seconds into the game that senior Alyosha Westbrook (Los Angeles, Calif.) heel-flicked into the goal to get the scoring started. PSU struck again in the 14th minute off another corner, before Nilsson picked up his first goal of the game with a beautiful shot from the left side four minutes later. Nilsson capped the scoring with his second of the afternoon in the opening minutes of the second half.

Freshman Brayden White (Whitefield, N.H.) made seven saves to post a shutout in his first career start in goal for the Panthers.

Prior to the game Plymouth State recognized its two seniors, Westbrook and Eli Child (Woodstock, Conn.), in a brief ceremony at midfield.

Plymouth State closes the season with a 4-10-0 mark, while NVU-Lyndon falls to 1-15-0.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 4, NVU-Lyndon 0
    • Plymouth State (4-10-0)
    • NVU-Lyndon (1-15-0)
Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State got things started early when Nilsson sent a corner into the six that Westbrook heeled into the net in the second minute.
  • The Panthers doubled the lead in the 14th minute on another corner piece. Freshman Filip Banggren (Hagan, Norway) served a perfect ball that classmate Frankie Driscoll (Kittery Point, Maine) headed into the goal to make it 2-0.
  • Nilsson added to the lead just four minutes later after some fancy footwork led to a shot from 15 yards out on the left side that slipped just inside the far post.
  • The Hornets best chance in the half came in the 37th minute when a forward made a cut to create space before firing a shot to the far past from the 12 yards out on the right side, but White made a full extension to his right to knock the ball away.
  • NVU-Lyndon collected the rebound and a follow-up shot ricocheted off a PSU defender, but again White dove and got a hand on it to push the ball just beyond the post.
  • Nilsson picked up his second goal of the afternoon after getting past the defense for a breakaway chance before finishing to the right post in the 47th minute.
  • Plymouth State maintained control throughout the remainder of the contest to close out the win.
By the Numbers:
  • White made seven saves and posted a clean sheet in his first career start.
  • Nilsson's five points were the most in a game since Oct. 25, 2017. He finished as the team leader in both goals and points.
  • Westbrook's tally was the sixth of his career.
  • PSU's offense came alive in the second half of the year. After scoring just twice through the first seven games the Panthers tallied 12 goals over the final seven, going 4-3-0 over that span.
  • The two teams have met just four times in the last 15 years. Plymouth State is 3-0-1 in those contests, with three shutouts.
