WTEN: Panthers sweep WestConn in opener

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – In a dominating performance from top to bottom the Plymouth State University women's tennis team kicked off its season with a 9-0 win over Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) match at the Bank of New Hampshire Field House at ALLWell North on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Panthers rolled picking up 8-0 and 8-2 wins in doubles and only dropped a total of 12 games throughout singles play on the way to the win.
 
Seniors Maggie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.), Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) and Kerstin Venincasa (Sutton, Mass.) and sophomore Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) all won twice.
 
PSU (1-0, 1-0 LEC) wins its 11th-straight season opener, while WestConn drops to 0-1 (0-1 LEC).

How it Happened:
  • McCarthy and Winter were unchallenged at No. 1 doubles, coasting to an 8-0 win, while Venincasa and Sundquist had little trouble at No. 2 (8-2).
  • PSU earned a third point in doubles play when the Colonials forfeited at No. 3.
  • McCarthy earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, and Winter pulled out a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 2.
  • Venincasa picked up her second win over the day with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3, while Sundquist didn't surrender a set on the way to a win at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-0).
  • Junior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) toppled her opponent at No. 5 (6-1, 6-0) and WestConn forfeited at No. 6 to account for the final.
By the Numbers:
  • Venincasa picked up her 30th career singles win to move into a tie for fifth among PSU's all-time wins leaders. Sundquist (27-12) and McCarthy (24-18) are also in the top-15.
  • Venincasa and Sundquist improved to 24-6 as a doubles team.
  • PSU has won each of the last 11 meetings between the two teams.
