WTEN: Panthers fall to league-leading RIC on Senior Day

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University closed out its home schedule with a 7-2 loss to Rhode Island College in Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis action at the Bank of New Hampshire Field House at ALLWell North on Friday afternoon.
 
Prior to the match Plymouth State honored its senior class – Maggie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.), Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.) and Kerstin Venincasa (Sutton, Mass.).
 
With the victory, Rhode Island College (7-0, 7-0 LEC) secures the regular season title and top seed for next week's LEC Tournament. The Panthers are locked into the No. 2 seed.
 
Plymouth State (5-2, 5-2 LEC) visits Castleton University for its regular season finale tomorrow (May 1).

How it Happened:
  • McCarthy and sophomore Kira Winter (Eliot, Maine) put up a fight at No. 1 doubles, falling by an 8-3 margin. Venincasa and Sundquist fell at No. 2, 8-2, while junior Julie Miller (Woburn, Mass.) and freshman Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) suffered an 8-0 loss at No. 3.
  • Winter pulled out a narrow win at No. 2, taking the first set 7-6 (8-6), but falling 7-5 in the second set. Winter pulled out a 10-6 win in the super tie breaker to earn PSU its first point.
  • Venincasa battled in her opening set at No. 3, falling 6-4, before dropping the second set 6-1.
  • Miller earned PSU's second point with a 6-4, 10-7 win at No. 5.
  • McCarthy fell at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-0), while Sundquist (6-0, 6-1) fell at No. 4.
  • Sophomore Alyssa Bettencourt (West Brookfield, Mass.), in her first action of the season, went down 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
By the Numbers:
  • The match was a potential preview of next week's LEC Tournament Championship, as the teams enter the bracket as the top two seeds.
  • RIC has won the last eight meetings between the teams and has captured six-straight regular season titles.
  • The Panthers are the only team to have earned a point against RIC this season.
