MSOC: UMass Boston slips past Panthers late

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Visiting University of Massachusetts Boston scored a pair of goals late in the second half to slip past Plymouth State University, 2-0, in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's soccer game at Arold Field on Saturday afternoon.

The teams went back-and-forth through the first half, but neither offense was able to break the ice. The game got physical during the second half as UMass Boston controlled the tempo, but PSU's back line was able to hold until late. UMB got on the board in the 80th minute, then tacked on an insurance tally five minutes later and PSU was unable to rally.

PSU dips to 0-5-0 (0-2-0 LEC), while UMass Boston moves to 5-2-0 and 1-1-0 in the LEC.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, UMass Boston 2
    • Plymouth State (0-5-0, 0-2-0 LEC)
    • UMass Boston (5-2-0, 1-1-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • The teams traded punches through the first half, with the Panthers' best opportunity coming in the 10th minute when junior Milian Eklund (Akersberga, Sweden) volleyed a Beacons' clearance attempt from 40-yards out but the shot carried just over the crossbar.
  • UMB countered a minute later, but sophomore Nicolas Cornejo (Durham, N.H.) made a sprawling save.
  • Sophomore Sean Kern (Rockport, Mass.) nearly put the Panthers ahead in the 46th minute when his header off a cross from classmate Faisal Abdallah (Concord, N.H.) was headed to the top left corner, but the UMB keeper came up with a clutch save.
  • UMass Boston missed a golden opportunity in the 49th minute. Cornejo got a hand on a cross but the rebound went directly to the Beacons' leading scorer at the six. Cornejo recovered to make a brilliant stop from the ground and the Panthers were able to clear the ball away.
  • The Beacons broke through in the 80th minute when senior Nilton de Andrade (Fogo, Cap Verde) sent a ball to classmate Cam Pattison (Cohasset, Mass.) down the right side and Pattison came into the box and tucked a shot inside the near post.
  • de Andrade doubled the lead in the 85th minute on a free kick from 20-yards out that curled inside the left post.
By the Numbers:
  • Cornejo finished with six saves for the Panthers.
  • de Andrade leads the league with nine goals on the season.
  • This was the first contest between the two teams to end in a result since the 2017 season, as each of the last two meetings finished in ties.
Up Next:
  • Plymouth State heads to rival Keene State College on Wednesday (Sept. 29) for a 7:00 p.m. clash with the Owls.
