Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ryan Moyer, Athletic Communications Assistant

MSOC: Panthers earn point with draw at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Nicolas Cornejo (Durham, N.H.) made four saves as Plymouth State University recorded a stalemate against the University of Southern Maine in a scoreless Little East Conference (LEC) men's soccer showdown at Hannaford Field on Wednesday night.

Cornejo recorded a trio of saves in the first half as the Panthers' defense would not allow the Huskies near their goal. Even with multiple opportunities to score, the game would head to the second half scoreless.

Cornejo snagged his last save of the night right at the start of the second half while the Panthers made another effort throughout the game to score. The game would eventually end scoreless as PSU prevented the Huskies from getting their first conference win of the season.

Plymouth State goes to 4-5-3 (1-3-2 LEC), while Southern Maine moves to 3-4-5 and 0-3-2 in league play.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, Southern Maine 0
    • Plymouth State (4-5-3, 1-3-2 LEC)
    • Southern Maine (3-4-5, 0-3-2 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Junior Faisal Abdallah (Concord, N.H.) got off to a hot start for the Panthers as he fired a shot with the first three minutes, but it sailed just over the goal.
  • Sophomore Sondre Asheim (Klepp, Norway) then led the offense on a rampage as he made three shots, with classmate August Westerholm (Stockholm, Sweden) and freshman Lucas Hollingworth (Akersberga, Sweden) taking two apiece, but none of them were able to find the back of the goal.
  • Cornejo was tested throughout the first half and early in the second, but he was able to effectively halt the hosts from scoring.
  • Asheim made multiple attempts in the final minutes of the game to break through, but it was to no avail as the game would end scoreless.
By the Numbers:
  • The Panthers were stout on defense, limiting Southern Maine to just seven shots.
  • PSU limited the Huskies to just one shot on goal over the second half.
  • Plymouth State owned a 16-7 advantage in shots and 10-4 margin in shots on goal.
  • Asheim fired a team-high five shots, all on target, with Hollingworth adding four.
  • Plymouth State goes to 7-1-3 in the last 11 meetings with the Huskies, and 25-8-4 dating back to the 1986 season.
