WSOC: Westfield State tames Panthers in season finale

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Sophia Torello (Killingworth, Conn.) tallied four saves but Westfield State University spoiled Plymouth State University's season finale, 5-0, on a rain-soaked Panther Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Torello made an initial reaching save to tip the ball over the crossbar early, but the Owls were able to score three first half goals for an early lead.

Freshman Molly Bellmore (Hebron, Conn.) sprang into action in the final half when she fired a shot at the Westfield State goal but could not break through the defense. The Owls tacked on another two goals to account for the final score.

Plymouth State closes the season with a 5-8-3 overall record, while the Owls head into the MASCAC Tournament as the top seed with a 12-3-1 mark.

  • Bellmore opened the second half with a scoring chance but it was to no avail as the Owls' defense stood its ground and moved the ball downfield to extend the lead to 4-0.
