MSOC: Panthers’ late rally falls short at Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Junior Faisal Abdallah (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Lucas Hollingworth (Akersberga, Sweden) each scored late, but Plymouth State University was unable to complete the comeback as Curry College held on for a 4-2 win in a non-conference men's soccer match at a rainy Walter Katz Field on Wednesday night.

Curry scored twice in the opening half, then extended the advantage to 4-0 in the 70th minute. Abdallah got the Panthers on the board in the 82nd minute and Hollingworth added his second of the year five minutes later but time ran out on PSU's comeback bid.

Plymouth State moves to 4-4-2, while the Colonels are 6-3-1.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 2, Curry 4
    • Plymouth State (4-4-2)
    • Curry (6-3-1)
How it Happened:
  • Curry opened the scoring in the seventh minute on a blast from 30 yards out to the top left corner.
  • Plymouth State kept the deficit at one until the final seconds of the half on a header off a corner kick with just four seconds left until the intermission.
  • The Colonels extended the lead in the 63rd minute, before making it 4-0 in the 70th minute.
  • Plymouth State continued to battle. Hollingworth made a run up the left side and crossed it into the box where Abdallah booted it home in the 82nd minute to get the Panthers on the board.
  • Five minutes later, sophomore August Westerholm (Stockholm, Sweden) played long ball into the right corner that Abdallah ran down and Hollingworth volleyed his cross past the Curry goalkeeper to cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • PSU fought to the end but was unable to scratch any closer.
By the Numbers:
  • The Colonels held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Curry had ten corner kicks to the Panthers' five.
  • Freshman Scott Danroth (Edmonton, Alberta) made a pair of saves in the first half, while junior Nicolas Cornejo (Durham, N.H.) stopped five shots in the second half.
  • Abdallah's tally was his team-leading fifth of the year, while he added an assist.
  • Hollingworth now has two goals and two assists on the season.
  • Plymouth State won the only other matchup between the two teams, 2-1, last fall.
