Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ryan Joy, Athletics Communications Assistant

WSOC: Rowe posts clean sheet in debut, Panthers draw

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's soccer team opened its 2023 campaign with a 0-0 tie with the Pilgrims of New England College on Don Melander Field Friday afternoon.

The Panthers controlled play for most of the 90 minutes, attacking in waves as the game waned on. Graduate students McKayla Palhof (Loudon, N.H.) and Kaliana Palhof (Loudon, N.H.) led the way, combining for 14 shots (eight on goal), as Plymouth State would not let up the pressure, but in the end could not find the back of the net.

Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Rowe (Cañon City, Colo.) registered a shutout in her first collegiate game, including a late-game diving save to her right to keep the Pilgrims off the board.

Plymouth State opens the season 0-0-1, as New England College starts 0-0-1.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, New England College 0
    • Plymouth State (0-0-1)
    • New England College (0-0-1)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State controlled much of the run of play in the first half keeping the Pilgrims pinned back in their own defensive half.
  • McKayla Palhof recorded six of the Panthers' nine shots in the opening half, including a ball that deflected off the defender and almost snuck into the near post as time expired.
  • Despite the Panthers dictating the first 45 minutes, the teams found themselves without a first half goal.
  • In the 57th minute, Palhof knocked one off the crossbar and sophomore Molly Bellmore (Hebron, Conn.) tried to head down the rebound but knocked it just wide as the Panthers poured on the pressure to start the second half.
  • Soon after, New England College recorded its first shot of the game, forcing Rowe to make her first career save.
  • The game started to heat up as PSU applied more pressure.  Three yellow cards were issued as the Panthers fought to take the lead, and the Pilgrims fought to hold on.
  • In the 86th minute, NEC countered up the field and served a ball on a left side cross inches from an extending midfielder trying to bury the cross.  The Pilgrims then rifled a shot forcing Rowe to her right to make a save to keep the teams deadlocked.
By the Numbers:
  • Plymouth State outshot NEC 26-2 in the contest.
  • PSU had 10 corner kicks to zero for New England College.
  • Plymouth State finished with a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The NEC goalkeeper stood on her head, recording 15 saves in the draw.
  • The Panthers are now 5-0-2 in the last seven meetings against NEC.
Up Next:
