MSOC: Panthers fall to Curry in high-scoring affair

MILTON, Mass. – The Plymouth State University men's soccer team fell to the Curry College Colonels, 4-3, in non-conference men's soccer action on Walter M. Katz Field Tuesday afternoon.

In a match that produced six first half goals, Plymouth State found itself down 4-2 at the midway break. Senior Faisal Abdallah (Accra, Ghana) opened the scoring for the Panthers, while junior Nils Skogestig (Saltsjo Boo, Sweden) put home Plymouth State's second goal, assisted by senior David Nilsson (Karlstad, Sweden).

Freshman Rowan McCarthy (Pepperell, Mass.) buried a header off a corner kick from senior Sondre Asheim (Klepp, Norway) in the second half to bring the match to 4-3, but the Colonels managed to cling onto the victory as the Panthers forced five saves from the Curry goalkeeper in the final 20 minutes of action.

  • Exactly 60 seconds later, in the 26th minute, the Colonels tied the game at 2-2 on a ball played back across goal that was ripped past the diving goalkeeper.
  • Feeling some late first half momentum, Curry gained its first lead of the match in the 34th minute on a headed ball off a corner kick to go ahead 3-2; followed up with a side volley finish in the 36th minute to give the Colonels a 4-2 advantage, where the score would stand at half time.
  • The Panthers were next up to tally the seventh goal of the match on a header goal off a corner by McCarthy in the 68th minute to close the gap to 4-3 with 20 minutes left to play.
  • Plymouth State applied heavy pressure in the final minutes in an attempt to bring the match back level, outshooting its opponent 11-7 in the second half, but fell just short as the final whistle blew.
