WBB: Panthers fall to #13/#19 UMass Dartmouth in LEC opener

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's basketball team fell to the nationally-ranked University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs, 94-47, in the Little East Conference (LEC) opener at Foley Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
 
The Corsairs, ranked #13 in the latest D3hoops.com poll and #19 in the WBCA poll, scored 25 first quarter points on nearly 65% shooting and did not look back. The Panthers tried to keep pace but struggled from the floor against the LEC preseason favorite. Graduate student Alessia Salzillo (Saugus, Mass.) and senior Alli Ingalls (Hampstead, N.H.) led the way with nine points apiece in the losing effort for Plymouth State.
 
PSU falls to 2-6 (0-1 LEC) on the season, while UMass Dartmouth remains undefeated at 6-0 (1-0 LEC).

Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • UMD started on the front foot, jumping out to a 12-0 run with 6:04 left on the clock in the first quarter of play.
  • The Panthers found their legs, trading baskets midway through the first, but the team still found itself down 19-7 with 1:26 remaining in the first.
  • The Corsairs closed out the first quarter with back-to-back three-pointers for an 18-point advantage (25-7) after one.
  • The Corsairs doubled up the Panthers, 24-12, in the second quarter to increase the margin to 30-points (49-19) at halftime.
  • UMD continued to pull away in the second half to secure a comfortable conference victory.
