WSOC: Oswell makes seven saves in setback at Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's soccer fell to the Wellesley College Blue, 2-0, on Wellesley Soccer Field Wednesday afternoon.
 
Wellesley managed to score an early goal in each half, which was enough to secure the team win on the afternoon. Juniors Nevaeh Petruzzi (Newmarket, N.H) and Molly Bellmore (Hebron, Conn.) led Plymouth State with two shots apiece, as sophomore goalkeeper Drea Oswell (Stafford Springs, Conn.) put forth a strong performance with seven saves in the losing effort.
 
The Panthers open Little East Conference (LEC) play on Saturday when the University of Massachusetts Boston travels to Arold Field.
 
Plymouth State falls to 3-2-0, while the Blue improve to 3-2-1 on the season.

How it Happened:
  • Wellesley got on the scoreboard early, poking home the first goal of the match when a through ball down the middle led to a breakaway chance as the hosts went up 1-0 in the fourth minute.
  • Oswell played strong in the net making five saves in the first half to keep the game close.
  • Petruzzi nearly tied things up with 30 seconds left until the half, but the Wellesley goalkeeper was equal to the task securing the 1-0 Wellesley advantage into halftime.
  • The Blue doubled its advantage in the 47th minute when a long pass into the box was converted by the hosts to make it 2-0.
  • Wellesley started to apply more pressure as the momentum of the second goal kept play in the Panthers' defensive half of the field.
  • Plymouth State had two late chances to take away the shutout as Bellmore found herself in on goal in the 86th and 89th minute, respectively.
  • The Blue slowed things down in the final minutes to salt away the non-conference victory.
By the Numbers:
  • Wellesley outshot the Panthers 16-6.
  • Shots on goal were in the Blue's favor, 9-2.
  • The Panthers have a strong 1.2 goals against average through the first five games of the season.
