PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore
Chloe Ahern (Middleton, Mass.) put up a strong fight at No. 1 singles, but league-leading Rhode Island College was too strong for Plymouth State University as the Panthers dropped a 9-0 decision to the Anchorwomen in a Little East Conference women's tennis match at the Holderness School Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
RIC snagged a quick 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. Ahern fell 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and senior
Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) won four games in her opening set, but RIC was able to cruise to the win.
Plymouth State slips to 1-4 (0-2 LEC), while the Anchorwomen extend their season-opening winning streak to ten straight (10-0, 4-0 LEC).
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, RIC 9
- Plymouth State (1-4, 0-2 LEC)
- RIC (10-0, 4-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
- Cardoso and junior Alyssa Craigie (Gilford, N.H.) won a pair of games at No. 2 doubles, but the Anchorwomen picked up three quick points after sweeping the pairs action.
- Ahern gave PSU its best chance at stealing a point from the high-powered RIC squad with a good fight at No. 1 singles. She was competitive in both sets despite coming up short by a 6-4, 6-3 decision.
- Cardoso battled in her first set at No. 4 singles, ultimately succumbing to her opponent by a 6-4 margin, before dropping her second set.
By the Numbers:
- The Panthers have historically rebounded well after a setback to RIC, posting a victory against the next opponent each of the last seven meetings.
- Plymouth State's last win in the series came during the 2014 LEC Tournament.
Up Next:
- Plymouth State remains at home to face WestConn on Saturday (Sept. 28). First serve is set for noon.
