PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Rhode Island College scored the game's lone goal with less than ten minutes to play to sneak past Plymouth State University, 1-0, in a Little East Conference men's soccer match at Arold Field on Saturday afternoon.
The tight battle featured limited opportunities for either squad, particularly through a well-played first half. With the game remaining scoreless into the final ten minutes, it appeared the Panthers were headed to another scoreless draw after tying preseason favorite UMass Boston, 0-0, a week ago. A long cross was headed to the six by the Anchormen, where the forward was able to collect and get enough on the shot to find the back of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead with 9:19 left on the clock.
The Panthers nearly pulled even with just over a minute to play, but a bid off the foot of freshman
Valentijn Buma (Bloemendaal, Netherlands) went off the right post and a shot on the rebound went high as RIC held on for the win.
Plymouth State moves to 3-4-2 (0-1-1 LEC), while RIC runs its record to 6-1-1 (2-0-0 LEC).
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, RIC 1
- Plymouth State (3-4-2, 0-1-1 LEC)
- RIC (6-1-1, 2-0-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
- RIC hit the post twice in the opening half, once in the 17th minute and again in the 34th, but the Panthers' defense held strong to keep the game scoreless.
- The Panthers nearly went into the break with a 1-0 lead, but the RIC goalkeeper came up with a big save on a header from close range by senior John Christie (Pembroke, Mass.) as the game went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
- The Anchormen had an early opportunity in the 47th minute when a long ball led to a breakout chance, but senior Nicolas Cornejo Mora (Durham, N.H.) was up to the task, denying the initial shot before classmate Nolan McMann (Millville, Mass.) cleared the ball out of the box.
- Cornejo Mora made another spectacular save on a blast from 25 yards out, extending his left arm to deflect the ball away. The Anchormen blasted the rebound to the back of the net, but an offsides call negated the scoring opportunity.
- Christie had a chance off a long pass to the far post off the foot of junior Massimo Korcsog (Ottawa, Ontario) in the 66th minute, but a RIC defender was just able to outleap him and head the ball aside.
- It appeared the Panthers may be headed for another scoreless draw, but a chip from the left side was headed to the six, where a RIC forward was able to settle and tuck a shot inside the right post for the 1-0 lead with 9:19 remaining.
- The Panthers' last opportunity came with just over a minute remaining. Buma ripped a shot from the top of the box through a trio of defenders, but the ball deflected off the right post and the rebound attempt drifted over the crossbar as RIC sealed the win.
By the Numbers:
- Cornejo Mora finished with four saves.
- The Anchormen held a 7-2 edge in corners, though much of that advantage came in the first half as RIC was limited to just two second-half corners.
- Rhode Island College held a narrow 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
- The Panthers hold a 20-17-5 edge over RIC in the all-time series. The last two meetings resulted in draws.
Up Next:
- Plymouth State remains in LEC action on Wednesday (Oct. 2) when the Panthers visit Southern Maine for a 6:00 p.m. contest at Hannaford Field.
