PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Plymouth State University finished as the runner up for the 2024-25 Little East Conference (LEC) Presidents' Cup, LEC Commissioner Al Bean announced last week.
Plymouth State's student-athletes from its 19 athletic programs that compete in the conference completed the year with a 3.38 average cumulative GPA, a slight improvement over last year's conference-best 3.36. Vermont State University Castleton claimed its third Presidents' Cup with a 3.40 average cumulative GPA.
The LEC Presidents' Cup measures the highest average cumulative GPA among the student-athletes from the conference's nine primary member institutions that compete in the league's 21 championship sport offerings.
"We're incredibly proud of the commitment our student-athletes show in the classroom," said Plymouth State Director of Athletics
Kim Bownes. "Finishing second in the Presidents' Cup standings, with all 19 of our LEC programs earning a 3.00 GPA or higher, speaks to the culture of academic excellence we've built at Plymouth State. It's a true team effort, and we'll continue striving to raise the bar."
All 19 of Plymouth State's programs competing in the LEC posted average cumulative GPAs of 3.00 or better, with 16 programs posting an average cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 and six recording an average cumulative GPA of at least 3.50. The Panthers' women's swim team led the way with a 3.60 average cumulative GPA, while the men's sports were led by the men's soccer team (3.51).
Five of the LEC's nine member institutions have won the Presidents' Cup in its history – Plymouth State, Eastern Connecticut, Keene State, UMass Dartmouth, and VTSU Castleton. Eastern Connecticut holds the record for the most LEC Presidents' Cup wins with seven.
