FARMINGTON, Maine – Freshman
Macy Swormstedt (Laconia, N.H.) had a career night, leading the Plymouth State University women's basketball team with 20 points, but the Panthers were edged by the University of Maine Farmington, 64-57, in a non-conference bout in Dearborn Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Beavers took a 13-point advantage two minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Panthers lit up the gymnasium with a 15-4 run to pull within two, 59-57, with one minute remaining. The hosts went 5-of-6 from the free throw line the rest of the way to secure the non-conference victory.
Swormstedt's 20-point effort was a new career high, while senior
Hailey Malozzi (Maynard, Mass.) added 14 points. Junior
Ashley Stephens (Pembroke, N.H.) chipped in 10 points in the losing effort.
Plymouth State falls to 8-10, while UMaine Farmington improves to 14-5.

How it Happened:
- Plymouth State opened with an early 8-5 advantage four minutes into the first quarter.
- The Beavers went on an 11-0 run to go ahead, 16-8, with less than a minute to go.
- UMF extended the margin to 12 points (28-16) with 3:47 left until halftime.
- The Panthers closed the gap to 30-24 at the break.
- UMaine Farmington pushed the lead to 46-36 with 2:17 remaining in the third quarter.
- Swormstedt knocked down two shots from the charity stripe to cut the margin to 50-42 entering the fourth.
- The Beavers extended to 55-42 after the first two minutes, but Plymouth State clawed back. Six straight points pulled the Panthers within 55-48, and Swormstedt had back-to-back buckets to make it a three-point game (57-54) with three minutes remaining.
- Stephens knocked down a pair of free throws to trim the deficit to 59-57 with a minute to go, but the Beavers answered at the line, then came away with a steal. Plymouth State fouled, and UMaine Farmington made just 1-of-2, but secured a key offensive rebound and knocked down two more free throws to seal the game.
