WSOC: Oswell, Panthers ride early offense to top Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Junior Sofia D'Addona (Torrington, Conn.) scored in the seventh minute, and senior Drea Oswell (Stafford Springs, Conn.) added a pair of first-half goals as Plymouth State University defeated Framingham State University, 3-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game at Maple Street Field on Wednesday night.

D'Addona received a pass from senior Piper Sullivan (Laconia, N.H.) near the top of the box and blasted a shot into the bottom-left corner to give the Panthers an early lead. Oswell doubled the advantage with a strong header off a corner kick from sophomore Islah Godo (Topsham, Maine) in the 34th minute, then connected with Godo again on another corner four minutes later.

The three-goal cushion proved to be enough for freshman goalkeeper Liv Desruisseaux (Dracut, Mass.), who made seven saves to record her third clean sheet of the season.

Plymouth State improves to 10-5-0, completing a perfect non-conference season (9-0-0) and matching its highest win total since the 2003 team went 10-7-1. Framingham State falls to 5-7-2.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Framingham State 0
    • Plymouth State (10-5-0)
    • Framingham State (5-7-2)
How it Happened:
  • Sullivan pressured the Framingham State goalkeeper after a pass-back, and Godo headed the clearance attempt to Sullivan just outside the box. Sullivan fed D'Addona, who made a run toward the top of the 18-yard box, settled the ball and fired a shot into the lower-left corner for a 1-0 lead just 6:17 into the contest.
  • Sullivan nearly doubled the margin with a rocket from the corner of the box, but the Rams goalkeeper dove to her right to knock the shot aside.
  • Desruisseaux made a diving stop in the 21st minute to preserve the one-goal lead.
  • Godo set up sophomore Maggie MacDonald (Pembroke, Mass.) for a chance in the 24th minute, but the goalkeeper came off her line and deflected the shot away.
  • Ten minutes later, Godo delivered a corner kick into the six-yard box, where Oswell powered a header into the net to make it 2-0.
  • The duo connected again less than four minutes later, as Oswell headed another Godo corner past the goalkeeper to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • Desruisseaux made two more saves in the second half to preserve the shutout as the Panthers protected their three-goal advantage.
By the Numbers:
  • Oswell recorded the first multi-goal game of her career.
  • D'Addona's goal was her second of the season.
  • Godo recorded two assists and leads the team with eight.
  • Desruisseaux made seven saves to earn the shutout.
  • Plymouth State held a 10-7 advantage in shots.
  • The teams' only previous meeting came in 1989, when the Panthers earned a 12-1 victory.
  • Plymouth State last completed a non-conference schedule without a loss in 1997, finishing 10-0-1. The only blemish was a tie in an NCAA Tournament game that required four overtimes and penalty kicks to determine which team advanced.
