WSOC: Panthers come up just short in LEC opener at RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Plymouth State University women's soccer team fell late on the road to Rhode Island College, 1-0, in Little East Conference (LEC) women's soccer action at Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The game looked destined for a scoreless draw as neither team was able to capitalize on its opportunities. RIC took advantage of a free kick from 35 yards out for the lone goal of the game in the 85th minute. Plymouth State pushed numbers forward and had a golden opportunity to net the equalizer three minutes later, but the RIC goalkeeper made a diving save on a blast from sophomore Maggie MacDonald (Pembroke, Mass.), and PSU was unable to get a clean strike at the rebound.

Sophomore Corinne Palhof (Loudon, N.H.) was dangerous all afternoon for the Panther attack, taking three shots, all of which were on target.

Plymouth State drops to 3-1-0 (0-1-0 LEC), while the Anchorwomen improve to 4-0-0 (1-0-0 LEC).

How it Happened:

The first half hour went by quietly as both teams wrestled for possession and scoring chances. The only shot on target came from Rhode Island College, as a shot from well beyond the box that was stopped off a hop by freshman keeper Gabby Morell (Landenberg, Pa.).
After 30 minutes of play, the Panthers got their first look on goal as Palhof took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that was stopped by the Anchorwomen goalkeeper.
The reminder of the half remained a stalemate as each team generated one corner kick but could not muster anything on target.
The Anchorwomen got off to a strong start to the second half as they took possession and looked to create chances. The Panther backline stood tall and didn't allow anything on goal in the opening 25 minutes.
Palhof got another chance in the 76th minute when she collected a ball from sophomore Clare Tuohy (Sunapee, N.H.) and fired a shot from a tough angle that was saved.
Just two minutes later, the same pair went back to work. Palhof worked up the wing and sent in a cross to Tuohy, who sent a header on goal that was stopped.
With 10 minutes to play, the Panthers looked to capitalize on a corner. Sophomore Islah Godo (Topsham, Maine) crossed the ball toward the far post, where Palhof was able to volley it on net, but again it was stopped.
The Anchorwomen scored the winner in the 85th minute when a powerful free kick found its way into the net.
The Panthers had one last golden chance when MacDonald took a strong left-footed shot on goal that was saved. There was a scramble in the box for the rebound, but the Panthers couldn't convert.
