Ryan Carr took over the wrestling program in May 2023 to become the 17th head coach in program history.
Â
Last winter he guided the team to one of its most successful seasons in recent history. Led by Chase Anestis '25 and Ty Miller '24, the team won the most dual matches since the 2017-18 season and posted the best finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship since 2011-12. Anestis went a remarkable 31-4 with 14 pins, finishing fourth at the regional championships to miss an NCAA Championship bid by just one spot. Miller posted a 35-11 record with 16 pins, highlighted by a win over the #5 nationally-ranked grappler in his weight class, while taking fifth at regionals. Both were four-time place finishers.
Â
The groundwork was laid during Carr's first season, as the Anestis/Miller duo anchored the squad. Anestis went 20-8 and earned All-NEWA honors after finishing seventh at regionals, while ending the year as a three-time place finisher. Miller posted team-highs of 22 wins and nine pins, and was also a three-time place finisher.
Â
A three-time All-New England wrestler for the Panthers, Carr competed at the 190-pound and heavyweight divisions from 1995-96 through 1998-99. He was crowned the New England Champion as a heavyweight during his senior season, while also earning All-New England honors as a sophomore and junior after placing second at 190 pounds both years.
Â
A team captain as a senior, Carr was also a three-time Academic All-American. After completing his eligibility he remained with the program as an assistant coach for the 1999-00 season, helping to mentor four All-New England wrestlers.
Â
Carr spent 11 years as head wrestling coach at Salem High School from 2001-12, where he coached 13 state champions and five New England champions. He served as Team Massachusetts All-Star head coach for three years and was a member of the Salem High football coaching staff from 2005-09. He held the position of President and Football Coordinator for the town's Pop Warner program from 2005-10 and was Vice President and Director of Salem Rams Youth Football from 2008-11.
Â
The recipient of the Plymouth State Alumni Achievement Award in 2011, Carr stepped away from coaching in 2012 after the birth of his first child.
