PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Defending Little East
Conference regular season champion Rhode Island College defeated
defending LEC Tournament champion Plymouth State University
Saturday afternoon, 7-2, in an LEC women's tennis dual match at
RIC.
The Anchorwomen continued their dominance in doubles, sweeping all
three flights from PSU. RIC is currently 29-4 in doubles action
this fall. RIC dropped singles matches at No. 1 and No. 2,
but swept the rest to pull out the victory. RIC is now 9-2
overall and 5-1 in conference matches, while PSU drops to 3-7 and
3-3.
Senior Jill Deyermond (Atkinson, N.H.) continued
her strong play for PSU, winning her fourth straight match at No. 1
singles to improve her record to 7-6 overall. She rebounded
from losing the first set, 6-1, to win the next two sets, 6-4 and
6-1, over Meg Funk, who came into the match with an 8-2 record.
Junior Meghan Rodier (Francestown, N.H.) also
picked up a nice straight-set win at #2 singles, defeating Sasha
Doonan-Rodriguez, who also entered the match at 8-2. Rodier
improved her singles mark to 7-4, matching Deyermond for the most
wins on the team.
PSU gave a good battle in several other matches against the
Anchorwomen. Sophomore Denise Huckins (Holderness,
N.H.) lost in a third-set super-tiebreaker at No. 6 singles, and
Huckins and sophomore Amanda Arponen (Plymouth,
Mass.) fell at No. 3 doubles, 9-7.
Plymouth State wraps up the regular season with a pair of home
matches this week - Tuesday against Lyndon State (3:30 p.m.) and
Saturday vs. Western Connecticut (11:00 p.m.)
