SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Plymouth State University
women's volleyball team won two out of three matches Saturday at
the Tom Hay Invitational, but fell to host Springfield College and
finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.
The Panthers started Saturday's play with a 3-0 victory over Roger
Williams University (30-19, 30-22, 30-17). After a break, PSU was
upended by Springfield in three games (30-13, 30-16, 30-17) but
rebounded to capture its final match of the day, 3-1, over Western
Connecticut (29-31, 30-18, 30-12, 30-20).
Springfield defeated both Plymouth State and WestConn and captured
the tournament title and improved its record to 17-6. PSU is
now 12-6 overall, WestConn is 9-8, and RWU is 12-8.
Junior Sarah Spears (Meredith, N.H.) recorded 73
digs in the tournament, and was PSU's representative on the
All-Tournament Team. She also contributed four aces in the
win over Western Conn.
Junior Wendy Dziedzic (Nashua, N.H.) led the
Panthers in the win over RWU, recording 10 kills, while classmate
Regan Bowlen (Portsmouth, N.H.) added nine kills
and a team-high 15 digs. Senior Kim Tobyne
(Manchester, N.H./West) chipped in with 10 digs and four service
aces.
Sophomore Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) led the way
for PSU in the win over WestConn., as she pounded out 14 kills and
made seven blocks. Bowlen added nine kills and 13 digs, and
Dziedzic contributed 13 kills.
PSU returns home to host Norwich University Wednesday at Foley
Gymnasium (6:00 p.m.)
