Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Junior forward Jose Neves
(Praia, Cape Verde) netted the game-tying goal with 10 minutes
remaining in regulation Thursday afternroon as the host Bears of
Bridgewater State College came from behind to earn a 2-2 tie with
the visiting Plymouth State Panthers in college men's soccer action
from Swenson Field.
Plymouth State opened the scoring in the first half on a goal by
senior Alex Marin (Manchester, N.H.) with the
assist going to sophomore Eric Owens (Newton,
N.H.). The Panthers took a 1-0 lead into the half as they outshot
the Bears in the opening stanza, 7-5, and held a 4-0 edge in corner
kicks.
Bridgewater tied the game up at 1-1 in the 50th minute as
sophomore Matt Daniels (South Easton, Mass.) netted his first
collegiate goal. Off a restart, junior Jon Machado (Weymouth,
Mass.) lofted a cross into the box and Daniels headed the ball past
Plymouth keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.)
PSU retook the lead in the 61st minute as Owens headed the ball
past BSC junior keeper Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, Mass.) off a long
volley from sophomore defender Tim Allan
(Harleysville, Pa.). That would set the stage for Neves' heroics as
he tallied the game-tying goal in the 80th minute. Freshman Pat
Kenneally (Braintree, Mass.) started the play coming down the right
side as he drove a long volley into the box which found the head of
junior Jon Nutting (Rockland, Mass.). Nutting redirected the ball
to Neves who headed it over the outstretched hand of Shute and into
the back of the net.
Both teams finished with 15 shots for the game with Plymouth
holding a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Two of those corners came
in the first overtime period but neither was threatening.
Seifert turned aside 5 shots for the Bears while Shute
registered 3 saves in goal for the Panthers.
BSC (1-3-1) is off until next Tuesday as the Bears travel to
Rhode Island College for a 3:30 match. Plymouth State (1-1-1) opens
Little East Conference play on Saturday, hosting Eastern
Connecticut at Panther Field (11 a.m.)
