Box Score
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Keith
Whittemore (Holderness, N.H./Plymouth Regional) set up the
first goal and scored the second Wednesday evening, leading the
Plymouth State University men's soccer team to a 2-1victory over
Worcester State College in non-conference action at Panther Field.
The host Panthers had seven first-half shots and the Lancers five,
but neither team was able to knock one home. PSU wasted
little time in scoring to open the second half, as Whittemore sent
a through ball behind the Worcester State defense in the 49th
minute, and freshman Adrian Burnett (Durham,
Conn.) converted his second goal of the season to put the Panthers
on the board.
Less than 10 minutes later Whittemore collected a rebound off the
Lancer keeper and drilled it into the back of the net for a 2-0
Panther lead. It was Whittemore's team-leading third goal of the
season. PSU nearly made it a three-goal lead midway through the
second half but a shot by junior George Delano
(Kingston, N.H.) bounced off the crossbar.
The Lancers showed some life in the final 10 minutes, and finally
broke the shutout in the final minute when junior Paul Membrino
(Fitchburg, Mass.) picked up a loose ball just inside the box and
found the lower left corner of the net.
Sophomore Dan Salzer (Dover, N.H./Oyster River)
finished with seven saves in the Panther goal to collect the win in
his first appearance of the season. The Panther defense was
bolstered by the play of senior Takeru Tanikawa
(Shizuoka, Japan) and junior Corey Cenate
(Springfield, Vt.)
Freshman keeper Dan Hansen (Worcester, Mass.) made four saves in
the Lancer goal before being replaced with 17:30 remaining by
senior Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, Ga.)
PSU, 3-2-1 overall, returns to Little East Conference play Saturday
with a visit to Southern Maine (1:00 p.m.) WSC, 3-6, returns
home to host Fitchburg State on Saturday in a MASCAC contest (4:00
p.m.)
