PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University and
Mount Ida College each won their first two matches Friday night on
the first day on competition at the Days Inn of Campton
Volleyball Tournament, hosted by PSU at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers needed five games to capture their first match, a
3-2 victory over Emerson College (30-19, 26-30, 30-13, 28-30,
15-10), but came back with a three-game sweep over Newbury College
(30-15, 30-11, 30-13). Mount Ida swept Lasell University 3-0 in its
opener (34-32, 30-19, 30-11) and then rallied from a game down to
defeat Bates College in four games (25-30, 30-22, 30-15, 30-17).
Pool play resume Saturday at 9 a.m. with Emerson facing Newbury
and Lasell meeting Bates. The semifinals are slated for 11 a.m.,
with the consolation round set for 1 p.m. and the championship
match at 3:00 p.m.
The Panthers used a balanced attack to pull out the win over
Emerson. Junior Regan Bowlen (Portsmouth, N.H.)
led the way with 11 kills, while senior Kaitlyn
Collins (Mahwah, N.J.) added nine and junior
Michaela Del Rosso (East Providence, R.I.) and
sophomore Amanda Greene (Stratford, Conn.) chipped
in with eight apiece. Junior libero Sarah Spears
(Meredith, N.H.) led the defense with 29 digs, and sophomore
Kathy Frankowski (Farmington, Conn.) contributed
11 service aces.
Del Rosso and junior Wendy Dziedzic (Nashua,
N.H.) led the Panthers in the triumph over Newbury with 10 and nine
kills, respectively, and sophomore Megan Elliott
(West Haven, Conn.) chipped in with eight. Freshman Lori
West (Gilmanton, N.H.) enjoyed a solid collegiate debut
with eight digs and six service aces.
The Panthers won both matches with one of their top returnees,
sophomore Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) on the bench
nursing an injury.
