CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland men's hockey team
scored four goals in the second and third periods Friday night and
skated to an 8-4 victory over Plymouth State University at Alumni
Arena in non-conference men's hockey action.
The Panthers led 1-0 after the first period on a power-play goal by
senior Bobby Dashner (Hyde Park, Mass.) at 12:48,
but Cortland scored four straight goals to start the second period
to grab a 4-1 lead. Freshman Greg Haney (Marcellus, N.Y.) netted
his first career goal on the power play at 2:57, junior Nick
Catanzaro (Buffalo, N.Y.) converted a penalty shot at 5:21,
freshman Jarrett Gold (East Setauket, N.Y.) scored on the backhand
at 8:14 and freshman Graham Fallon (Endicott, N.Y.) finished the
run on a breakaway at 14:42.
Senior Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden)
connected for his first of his two goals in the game for PSU at
17:36 with the Panthers on a two-man advantage to make it a 4-2
game at the end of two.
The Red Dragons seemed to be in control of the game with a
short-handed score from Gold at 5:06 and an even-strength goal from
senior Barry McLaughlin (Bellport, N.Y.) at 9:04. Plymouth State,
however, pulled to within 6-4 on a power-play goal from sophomore
Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md) at 11:59 and a
short-handed score by Bojadzic at 13:06. Cortland clinched the game
when freshman Brent Fallon (Endicott, N.Y.) and Catanzaro closed
out the scoring.
Catanzaro led Cortland with two goals and two assists, while Gold,
who has nine points in his last three games, contributed two goals
and an assist. Sophomore Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
registered a career-high four assists.
Freshman Bryan Horrigan (Brookfield, Wis.)
collected three assists for the Panthers.
Junior goalie Mike Mistretta (Buffalo, N.Y.) started in net for
Cortland and made 16 saves into the third period, before giving way
to senior Jon Bova (Camillus, N.Y.), who stopped three shots.
Mistretta finished the final five minutes, 37 seconds and did not
register another save.
Senior goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden)
started for PSU and made 30 saves in 56:21. Freshman Kevin
Crosby (Farmington, Conn.) played the final 3:39 and
stopped one shot.
The Red Dragons improve to 7-8-1 overall, while the Panthers fell
to 4-5-2. The same two teams meet again Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
