LACONIA, N.H. - Junior Chris Reilly (Lexington,
Mass.) knocked in a rebound with just 27 seconds remaining in
overtime Saturday night, giving Becker College a 3-2 victory over
Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference men's ice
hockey game at Laconia Ice Arena.
It was a tight,
defensive battle the entire way. After a scoreless first
period, sophomore Jared Kersner (Rockville, Md.) put the visiting
Hawks on the board with a shorthanded goal at the 6:51 mark.
That ended up as the only goal in the first 40 minutes as the
goaltenders, senior Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden)
of PSU and sophomore Tony Stoehr (DePere, Wis.) of Becker, stopped
everything else they saw.
There was a
flurry in the first minute of the third period. A Becker minor
penalty led to a PSU power play goal just 25 seconds in the period
by sophomore Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.), but
any momentum for the Panthers was quickly thwarted just 20 seconds
later when junior John Nogatch (Kirkland, Wash.) answered for
Becker to give the Hawks the lead back.
PSU pulled even
again with just under nine minutes remaining in the third on
freshman Andrew Stewart's (O'Leary, PEI) first
career goal. The Panthers had a power play in the final three
minutes of regulation, but couldn't convert it and the teams went
to overtime tied at 2-2 where Reilly won it for Becker.
Kersner
finished with a goal and two assists for the Hawks. Chambers had a
goal and an assist for PSU, and freshman Seth
McQuade (Manchester, N.H.) picked up assists on both
Panther goals.
Stoehr finished
with 28 saves for Becker, and Helgesson made 26 stops for Plymouth
State.
PSU, now 4-8-2
overall and 1-3-1 in the ECAC Northeast, is back in action
Wednesday with a conference game at Southern New Hampshire
University (7:30 p.m.) The Hawks, now 7-8-1 overall and 4-3-0 in
the ECAC Northeast, skate again Tuesday at Curry College (7:35
p.m.)
