DANBURY, Conn. - The Plymouth State University
women's tennis team wrapped up the regular season Saturday
afternoon on the short end of a 6-3 decision against Western
Connecticut State University.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season at 4-8 overall and 3-4 in
the Little East Conference. The Colonials improve to 7-3 overall
and 3-3 in the LEC, and have one more regular season match Sunday
against Salem State.
Both PSU singles wins came in three sets after dropping the opening
set. Senior Meghan Rodier (Francestown,
N.H.) won the No. 1 singles match, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4, and
freshman Sandy Capecelatro (Brewster, N.Y.) was a
winner at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The only doubles team to win for PSU was the No. 3 tandem of
sophomore Nikki Kolb (Gilford, N.H.) and freshman
Abby Warren (Durham, N.H.), who improved their
record to 3-2 with an 8-6 win.
Sophomore Lauren Post (Danbury, Conn.) led the Colonials, capturing
matches at No. 2 singles and with Justine Perna (Burlington, Conn.)
at No. 1 doubles. Junior Brittany Hoynack (Old Lyme, Conn.) and
freshman Alyssa Hoynack (Old Lyme, Conn.) were also double-winners,
winning at third and fourth singles respectively, and teaming
up for the victory at second doubles.
PSU will be the fifth seed in the LEC Tournament, which starts
Tuesday, and WestConn has clinched the fourth seed. The
Panthers will make a return visit to Danbury for Tuesday's first
round match. UMass Dartmouth went 7-0 in LEC play this fall to
capture the regular season title.
