DANBURY, Conn. - The fifth-seeded
Plymouth State University women's tennis team was knocked out of
the Little East Conference team tournament Tuesday afternoon,
falling to fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State University, 5-2,
in a first-round match at Westside Courts.
WestConn, 9-3, advances to the LEC semifinals this Saturday.
The Colonials, 9-3, will find out later on Tuesday who their
opponent will be in the next round following the completion of
quarterfinal action. The semifinals will be at the highest
remaining seed in the eight-team tournament.
Other quarterfinal matches include: #1 seed UMass Dartmouth hosting
#8 seed University of Southern Maine; #2 Bridgewater State hosting
#7 Salem State and #3 Rhode Island College hosting #6 UMass Boston.
Those three matches began at 3:30 pm on Tuesday.
WestConn sophomores Lauren Post (Danbury, Conn.) and Justine Perna
(Burlington, Conn.) came from behind at number one doubles to
defeat Meghan Rodier (Francestown, N.H.) and
Laura Donovan (Acton, Mass.), 8-5. Alyssa
and Brittany Hoynack (Old Lyme, Conn.) defeated Buffy
Garland (Freedom, N.H.) and Amanda
Arponen (Plymouth, Mass.), 8-4 to give WestConn a 2-1 edge
going into singles' action. PSU freshman Lydia
Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) and sophomore Abby
Warren (Durham, N.H.) picked up Plymouth State's doubles
win in the third flight, 8-0.
After PSU's Sandy Capecelatro (Brewster, N.Y.)
defeated WestConn's Maxx Zimmer (Sandy Hook, Conn.) at #6 singles,
6-4, 6-1, Post and the Hoynack sisters coasted to victories at #2
through #5 singles and closed out the match. Post defeated Donavan,
6-1, 6-0 at number two singles while Brittany Hoynack defeated
Garland, 6-1, 6-0 and Alyssa Hoynack got by Arponen, 6-1, 6-2 at #3
and #4, respectively.
Rodier led in her first singles match against Perna, 6-3, 2-3 and
WestConn's Brittany DiMauro (Torrington, Conn.) and PSU's Smith
were deadlocked at a set apiece when the Colonials obtained their
fifth and deciding point. Rodier concludes her Panther career
with a 36-21 overall singles record.
Plymouth State concludes its season at 4-9 overall. The
Panthers were the fifth seed in the tournament after posting a 3-4
LEC record during the regular season.
