PSU Women's Tennis falls to Rhode Island College

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Rhode Island College proved to be too strong for Plymouth State University Friday afternoon as the Anchorwomen cruised past the Panthers, 8-1, in a Little East Conference women's match at the P.E. Center Courts.

Senior Meg Funk (Oakdale, Conn.) led the way for the Anchorwomen, winning in straight sets at No. 1 singles and teaming with junior Julie Bannon (Narragansett, R.I.) for a win at No. 1 doubles.  Sophomore Brittany LaBarre (Greenville, R.I.) was an easy winner at No. 2 singles for RIC, and paired up with freshman Gabriela Batek (Greenville, R.I.) for a victory at No. 2 doubles.

Freshman Lydia Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) picked up PSU's only win on the day at No. 4 singles, bouncing back from a 6-4 loss in the first set to win the second set in a tiebreaker and take the third-set super-breaker with daylight fading, 10-6. Smith owns the best singles record on the Panthers at 7-5.

PSU, which has dropped three matches in a row to dip to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in the LEC, is on the road for its last three regular season matches, beginning Tuesday at Lyndon State (3:30 p.m.)  RIC, 7-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play, returns home to host Clark University on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
