PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Plymouth
State University women's volleyball team won both of its matches in
straight sets Saturday afternoon in the Johnson & Wales
University Fall Classic at the Harborside RAC, and the Panthers
finished runner-up in the tournament with a 3-1 record.
PSU defeated Smith College in its first match of the day by scores
of 27-25, 26-24 and 25-19. The Panthers came back with a 25-10,
25-17, 25-7 victory over Suffolk in the nightcap. Johnson
& Wales won the tournament for the second year in a row, going
4-0 for the weekend, while PSU came in second with a 3-1 mark.
Junior Carly Newton (Centerville, Mass.) led the
Panthers on Saturday and was Plymouth State's representative on the
All-Tournament Team. She recorded 12 kills in both of PSU's
wins over Smith and Suffolk.
Junior Eliza Badeau (Foster, R.I.) continued her
strong play for the Panthers, as she made 10 kills against Smith
and 12 kills and nine service aces against Suffolk. Her 12
kills came on just 13 attempts with no errors, setting a new school
record for attack percentage in a match (.923).
PSU, 11-5 overall, returns home to host Keene State in a key Little
East Conference match Tuesday at Foley Gymnasium (6:00 p.m.)
