BOSTON, Mass. - The Plymouth State University
women's tennis team won its second match in three days Tuesday
afternoon, defeating the University of Massachusetts Boston, 6-3,
in a Little East Conference match played at Boston College High
School.
PSU won four of the six singles matches and the second and third
doubles encounters to pull out the team victory. The Panthers
evened their LEC record at 3-3 and improved to 4-7 overall, while
UMB drops to 1-5 in the conference and 5-5 overall.
Junior Amanda Arponen (Plymouth, Mass.) was a
double-winner for PSU, winning in straight sets at No. 3 singles
and teaming with sophomore Buffy Garland (Freedom,
N.H.) for a victory at No. 2 doubles. Senior Meghan
Rodier (Francestown, N.H.) took the No. 1 singles match
for the Panthers with an easy straight-set win.
Freshmen Lydia Smith (Marblehead, Mass.) and
Sandy Capecelatro (Brewster, N.Y.) were also
singles winners for PSU at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Sophomore Nikki Kolb (Gilford, N.H.) and freshman
Abby Warren (Durham, N.H.) paired up to capture
the win at No. 3 doubles.
The Beacons were led by Carolina Gonzalez (Bridgewater, Mass.), who
was a winner at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.
The Panthers wrap up the regular season this Saturday with an LEC
match at Western Connecticut (12:00 p.m.) The LEC Team Tournament
starts next Tuesday (Oct. 14), with first-round pairings to be
determined after this weekend's contests.
