WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Junior Matt
Berard (Calgary, Alb.) scored his third goal of the year
with 4:20 remaining in the third period Saturday evening to lead
the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a 4-3 victory over
Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference men's ice
hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The goal capped
a wild third period which saw UMD pull out to a 3-1 lead before PSU
rallied to tie it at 3-3 with 13 minutes remaining. The
Corsairs pulled out the win to improve to 4-1-0 overall and 3-0-0
in league play, while the Panthers drop to 1-2-0 both overall and
in conference games.
The visitors
had a 51-33 advantage in shots on goal. PSU freshman goalie
Allen Schneider (Strongsville, Ohio) was
outstanding in the Panther goal, making 47 saves, including 22 in
the third period.
After a
scoreless first period, PSU got on the board at 2:37 of the middle
frame on a goal by junior Chris Chambers (Crofton,
Md.), his first of two in the game. UMD evened the score at
the 12:20 mark on a goal by junior Matt Serino
(Saugus, Mass.), and the teams went to the third period tied at
1-1.
The Corsairs
tallied a pair of goals just 26 seconds apart early in the third
period to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman Mike Owens (South Boston,
Mass.) got the first one at 4:28 and senior Chris Shore (West
Haven, Conn.) followed with another at 4:54.
PSU did not go
down without a fight. Freshman Chris Mohar
(Bloomfield, Colo.) got one back with his first career goal at
6:09, and Chambers added his second, on the power play, to tie it
at 3-3 with 12:57 on the clock, setting up Berard's
game-winner. Chambers leads the Panthers with five goals in
three games to date this
season.
Senior Jeff
Green (Medway, Mass.) recorded the win in the Corsairs net with a
30-save effort.
Both teams are
back on the ice on Tuesday with non-conference road games, Plymouth
State visiting Southern Maine and UMass Dartmouth traveling to
Babson.
