Late goal lifts UMD past PSU in men's ice hockey

Box Score

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Junior Matt Berard (Calgary, Alb.) scored his third goal of the year with 4:20 remaining in the third period Saturday evening to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a 4-3 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference men's ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.

The goal capped a wild third period which saw UMD pull out to a 3-1 lead before PSU rallied to tie it at 3-3 with 13 minutes remaining.  The Corsairs pulled out the win to improve to 4-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in league play, while the Panthers drop to 1-2-0 both overall and in conference games.

The visitors had a 51-33 advantage in shots on goal.  PSU freshman goalie Allen Schneider (Strongsville, Ohio) was outstanding in the Panther goal, making 47 saves, including 22 in the third period.

After a scoreless first period, PSU got on the board at 2:37 of the middle frame on a goal by junior Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.), his first of two in the game.  UMD evened the score at the 12:20 mark on a goal by junior Matt Serino (Saugus, Mass.), and the teams went to the third period tied at 1-1.

The Corsairs tallied a pair of goals just 26 seconds apart early in the third period to take a 3-1 lead.  Freshman Mike Owens (South Boston, Mass.) got the first one at 4:28 and senior Chris Shore (West Haven, Conn.) followed with another at 4:54.

PSU did not go down without a fight.  Freshman Chris Mohar (Bloomfield, Colo.) got one back with his first career goal at 6:09, and Chambers added his second, on the power play, to tie it at 3-3 with 12:57 on the clock, setting up Berard's game-winner.  Chambers leads the Panthers with five goals in three games to date this season.

Senior Jeff Green (Medway, Mass.) recorded the win in the Corsairs net with a 30-save effort.

Both teams are back on the ice on Tuesday with non-conference road games, Plymouth State visiting Southern Maine and UMass Dartmouth traveling to Babson.
