GORHAM, Maine - Senior Dan Gordon
(Lynnfield, Mass.) had two goals and two assists Tuesday afternoon
to lead the University of Southern Maine past Plymouth State
University, 6-0, in a non-conference men's ice hockey game at the
USM Ice Arena.
The win was the second straight for the Huskies who raised their
record to 2-1. The Panthers dropped their third straight to
fall to 1-3. The game was called at 6:24 of the third period
due to a power failure.
Southern Maine took the lead for good late in the first period when
sophomore Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) beat PSU junior goalie
Aaron Runner (Alpharetta, Ga.) with a 30-foot shot
through a screen.
Gordon potted a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 13 seconds left in the
period to give USM a 2-0 advantage at the first break.
Sophomore Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) and freshman Dan Rautenberg
(Cape Elizabeth, Maine) drew the assists.
Gordon pushed the margin to 3-0 with his second goal, set up by
Rautenberg and junior Ryan Jean (Randolph, Maine), at 4:54 of the
second. Rutt scored his first of the season at 10:21 off
assists from Rautenberg and Gordon. Rautenberg lit the lamp
at 15:52, assisted by Gordon and freshman Chris LaCount (South
Easton, Mass.). Junior Patrick Noonan (Burlington, Mass.) got
the final goal at 19:14.
Senior goalie Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine) posted his second
career shutout for USM stopping all 13 shots he faced. Runner
stopped 16 of 20 shots before giving way to freshman Allen
Schneider (Strongville, Ohio). Schneider stopped 11
of 13 shots he faced.
Southern Maine returns to action this weekend at the Babson College
Invitational Tournament facing Manhattanville College in a first
round game Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Plymouth State will take on
Tufts University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a first round game of
the PAL/Stovepipe Tournament in Manchester, N.H. PSU is the
three-time defending tournament champion.
