FITCHBURG, Mass. - Fitchburg State College
overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period Saturday afternoon
to earn an important ECAC Northeast point with a 5-5 tie against
Plymouth State University at Fitchburg State College's Wallace
Civic Center.
The Falcons are now 11-8-4 overall (7-4-3 ECAC Northeast) while the
Panthers are 8-10-3 overall and 5-5-2 in the conference. Plymouth
State is now in eighth place in the Northeast while FSC is
currently in fourth place with other conference games still
remaining Saturday night.
The visitors built a 3-1 cushion on goals by Tim
Vlcek (LaGrange Park, Ill.), Tommy Woods
(Nashua, N.H.) and Dave Dufresne (Dracut, Mass.).
The Falcons got their first period tally on a Stephen Schofield
(Valley Village, CA) power play goal. Schofield would finish the
afternoon with a pair of goals and three helpers.
Schofield got the hosts to within a goal in the second period at
3-2 on his second power play tally of the day, but Chris
Cantara (Pelham, N.H.) made the it a 4-2 game heading into
the third period with PSU's first power play tally.
The final 20 minutes of regulation would prove to be a shootout as
the Falcons quickly knotted the game at 4-4 with goals from Bob
Kalousian (Marlboro, Mass.) on the power play just 3:50 into the
third and Matt Arsenault (Gardner, Mass.) less than three minutes
later.
Kalousian added his second of the night midway through the third to
give Fitchburg its first lead of the afternoon at 5-4. However, the
lead would not last long as Sean Buckley
(Sagamore, Mass.) tied the game for the second and final time with
a power play goal at 13:03.
FSC netminder Devan McConnell (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and Plymouth
State goaltender Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden)
each turned away 31 shots in the tie.
The Panthers return home to host Stonehill College on Monday in a
make-up game at Waterville Valley (6:00 p.m.) Fitchburg State
also plays at home on Monday, hosting Franklin Pierce (7:00 p.m.)
