BEVERLY, Mass. - Third-seeded
Lasell College got 21 saves from senior goaltender Mark DeMieri
(Seaford, N.Y.) and the Lasers knocked off second-seeded and
defending champion Plymouth State University, 10-5, in the
semifinals of the ECAC New England Men's Lacrosse Tournament.
Lasell led 4-0 after one period and had a 5-0 margin before PSU got
on the board with six minutes to go in the first half. The Lasers
extended their 6-1 halftime advantage to 8-1 early in the third
quarter and maintained the lead the rest of the way. Lasell
(10-6) will meet top-seeded Endicott College in Sunday's
championship game; the Gulls blasted fourth-seeded Castleton State
College in the first semifinal, 29-5.
Plymouth State wraps up the season with a 12-7 record, which ties
for the program's mark for most wins in a season. It was
PSU's third post-season berth in four years.
Sophomore Brandon Keith (Marston Mills, Mass.) led the way for the
Lasers, scoring four goals and dishing out two assists. Junior Ryan
Koerner (Floral Park, N.Y.) was also impressive in the upset win,
scoring three times. A 5-0 lead proved to be enough for Lasell's
DeMieri, as the senior was particularly strong in the second half
with 13 of his 21 saves after the break.
Plymouth State was led by a pair of multiple goal scorers in
sophomores Steve Engel (South Windsor, Conn.) and
Brian Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.), as the duo
each tallied two goals on the afternoon. Senior John
Cogswell (Jefferson, Mass.) rounded out the goal scoring
for PSU, and senior attackman Adam Krinsky
(Concord, N.H.), who entered the game just one goal shy of 100 for
his career, ended the day with four assists. Krinsky departs
Plymouth State with 99 career goals and 121 assists, and his 220
points rank fourth on PSU's all-time scoring list.
Engel topped the Panthers with seven ground balls, while senior
Mike Russell (Concord, N.H.) picked up six and
junior Conor McCullough (Dover, N.H./Oyster River)
collected five.
PSU freshman goalkeeper Billy Morgan (Winchester,
Mass.) finished off a strong rookie campaign, making 11 saves in
Saturday's semifinal contest.
