Box Score
CASTLETON, Vt. - Trishia Fellows scored a pair of
goals, including the game-winner, to propel Castleton State College
to a 4-3 overtime win over visiting Plymouth State University in
non-conference field hockey action.
Plymouth State opened the scoring 9:43 into the game when senior
Ashley Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) knocked home a pass
from junior Sarah Smith (Lexington, Mass.)
Gutowski made it 2-0 less than seven minutes later when junior
Kerry D'Ambroise (Lowell, Mass.) sent a cross in
front of the cage, and Gutowski one-timed it in for her third goal
of the season. The Panthers clung to the 2-0 lead at halftime,
thanks in large part to four saves by freshman goalie Elyse
Sedgley (Hopkinton, N.H.)
The Spartans opened the second half on the attack, scoring three
unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead. Carolyn Griggs broke the ice
two minutes in, scoring her second goal of the season off a Sarah
Flore assist. Griggs later set up Marie Amaral's first goal of the
season to tie the score, on a nifty pass that eluded Sedgley and
made its way to Amaral's waiting stick. With 13 minutes remaining
Fellows tallied the go-ahead goal on a cross from Amaral.
The lead was short-lived, however, as sophomore Courtney
McLaughlin (Bellingham, Mass.) forced overtime with her
first goal of the season just two minutes later. Castleton goalie,
Trisha Clark made a sprawling save on a Gutowski shot, but could
not get to her feet in time to stop McLaughlin's rebound.
In the 81st minute of action, Griggs blasted a shot to the right of
the goal that was redirected by Fellows just past the diving
Sedgley. For Felllows, it was her third game-winning goal, and
fifth overall on the season.
The evenly matched game finished with Plymouth State holding a
slight 20-17 edge in shots, while Castleton took 12 penalty corners
compared to 11 for the Panthers. Clark stopped nine shots for the
3-2 Spartans, while Sedgley turned away 10 as Plymouth State falls
to 0-2.
Castleton is back in action on Sunday when the Spartans host North
Atlantic Conference foe Husson University in a non-conference
match-up. Plymouth State will take on Salem State on Saturday at
12:30 p.m. as the Panthers open their Little East Conference
schedule.
