Box Score
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Salem State
College scored a pair of first-half goals Wednesday afternoon and
that's all the Vikings needed to defeat Plymouth State University,
2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match at Panther Field.
The Vikings are off to a 3-0 start to the season, while PSU drops
to 1-2. It was the home opener for the Panthers.
Sophomore Tony Moreno (Lynn, Mass.) broke a scoreless deadlock in
the 35th minute when he picked up a loose ball on the
right side of the box and deposited his first goal of the season
into the far corner. Six minutes later, junior Andrew Angus
(Boston, Mass.) redirected a crossing pass from freshman Matt
Figueiredo (Wilmington, Mass.) into the goal to give the visitors a
2-0 lead at halftime.
Plymouth State regrouped at the break and applied more pressure in
the second half, out-shooting the Vikings, 9-3, to finish with a
16-8 margin for the game, but could not push one across.
Senior Pawel Brzykcy (Krakow, Poland) played a solid game in goal
for Salem State, finishing with seven saves for his second straight
shutout. Senior Tyler Shute (Deerfield,
N.H.) made two saves in the second half for PSU, coming on in
relief on junior Dan Salzer (Dover, N.H.), who
played the first half in the Panther goal.
PSU plays a pair of non-conference home games this weekend at
Panther Field, hosting Bridgewater State College Saturday at 2:00
p.m. and Green Mountain College Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Salem
State plays its third straight road game on Saturday at Clark
University (1:00 p.m.)
