NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Plymouth
State University scored twice in the first half Saturday afternoon
and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth,
2-0, in a Little East Conference field hockey game at Cressy Field.
Junior Sarah Smith (Lexington, Mass.) and senior
Ashley Gutowski (Conway, N.H.) each scored for the
Panthers in the first half. Both players picked up loose balls and
came in alone to score against Corsairs junior goalie Seana Golden
(Somerset, Mass.). Smith and Gutowski share the team lead
with five goals on the season, and Smith has four goals in the last
two games.
The Panthers out shot the Corsairs, 14-8, although UMass Dartmouth
had a 9-2 edge in penalty corners. Golden made four saves for UMD,
while freshman Elyse Sedgley (Hopkinton, N.H.)
made six for PSU to record her third straight shutout victory.
Plymouth State improved to 3-2 and 2-0 in conference play, while
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 4-2 and 1-1 in the LEC. The Corsairs
will return to action when they visit the University of New England
Wednesday evening. The Panthers visit Western Connecticut next
Saturday for a 6:00 p.m. LEC contest.
